Trenchless vs. Excavated Sewer Repair
Sewer repair should follow evidence about the pipe, not a preference for a method name. Lining, pipe bursting, spot repair, rerouting, and open excavation each have conditions where they may or may not fit. The final design depends on pipe condition, grade, connections, access, utilities, soil and groundwater observations, authority requirements, and the desired acceptance test.
Evidence to Collect First
A useful investigation identifies the affected fixtures, cleanout and access points, pipe route if known, material, diameter, depth, prior repairs, and recurrence history. Camera and locator work may document visible condition and approximate position, but opaque water, debris, offsets, or a collapsed section can limit the evidence.
Record where the camera entered, how far it traveled, which defects were visible, and where inspection stopped. Utility locating and site review are separate from camera locating.
What Lining Changes
Lining places a new material within an existing pipe. Suitability depends on the host pipe's continuity, diameter, deformation, cleanliness, connections, transitions, access, and the product's approved use. The design must address branches, cleanouts, changes in direction, curing or installation conditions, and how the finished work will be inspected.
A pipe that cannot be cleaned, accessed, or restored to a suitable shape may not support this method.
What Pipe Bursting Changes
Bursting breaks or displaces an existing line while pulling a replacement through the route. Entry and exit access, utilities, adjacent structures, soil conditions, bends, transitions, and connection points matter. The method still requires excavation at selected locations and may not fit every pipe or site.
What Open Excavation Allows
Excavation exposes the pipe so the damaged section, bedding, grade, connections, and surrounding conditions can be directly addressed. It may be needed for severe collapse, poor alignment, inaccessible transitions, complex branches, or conditions that require physical correction.
The scope should define excavation limits, utility protection, shoring or safety planning, spoils, backfill, compaction, testing, surface restoration, landscaping, and access.
Compare Methods With the Same Questions
For each proposed method, ask:
- Which evidence shows the method fits this pipe?
- Which line sections and connections are included?
- What access or excavation remains necessary?
- How are grade, diameter, flow, and branch connections handled?
- Which permits and inspections apply?
- What pre- and post-work evidence will be delivered?
- Which surface, landscape, concrete, or interior restoration is excluded?
Do not compare two proposals until their boundaries describe the same problem and line segment.
